The CommunityThe town of Earlton (Township of Armstrong) comprises but one part of North Eastern Ontario known as South Temiskaming. Other residential communities are Cobalt, Englehart, Elk Lake, Latchford and Temiskaming Shores (comprised of New Liskeard, Haileybury, and the Township of Dymond). There are also many residents occupying the villages and townships of the surrounding agricultural area. Located near the Ontario/Quebec border, this area is rich in natural resources. It is known as the "Birth Place" of Ontario's Mining Industry, with the town of Cobalt being famous for its Silver Mines. The town of Haileybury is home to a world-class mining college, the Haileybury School of Mines, (a campus of Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology). New Liskeard is the commercial community in South Temiskaming and contains a variety of motels, retail, industrial and commercial outlets. The area is also known as "The Clay Belt" due to the approximately 600 square km. glacial deposit of fertile farmland in the middle of the Pre-Cambrian Shield. Temiskaming is famous for many first-class dairy, beef and crop farm operations. The forestry industry includes a number of lumber/logging companies as well as a large OSB (waferboard) manufacturing plant located in Englehart which employs approximately 300 people. Complementing the resource and agricultural industries are numerous light industry and retail facilities. The area's natural beauty and excellent outdoor recreational opportunities ensure tourism remains a stable part of the area's economy. |
